Description:

Tall plant (~7 feet) making one giant spike with many small purple flowers. Growing in someone's front yard.

Habitat:

Urban yard.

7 years eh? Almost worth treating the family to a trip to La Palma to celebrate ;) Imagine what these look like en masse in the wild!
Fortunately I think the climate there in coastal northern California, where the redwoods grow, is moderate enough that it rarely would get cold enough to harm this plant. It certainly was quite the sight!
Yes! Thank you craig for the ID. I took this photo 7 years ago and never really knew where to start looking to figure out what it could be. Hooray for PN!
These are such great plants and bees really adore them. The only trouble is they will only take a little frost and need 2-3 years to flower. If we have a harsh winter like the last one in the UK, they go to mush :(
