Description:

I found these aphids on a thistle plant in a vacant lot near my house. I thought it was interesting that they looked almost plaid!

Thanks Karen! The shape and lack of shine seem right, and they do seem to come in a wide range of colors... so I'd say you called it. Updated accordingly. :)
textless, I found a photo of these in one of my guides 'Garden Insects of North America' by Cranshaw. Unfortunately this species is variable in appearance & I haven't been able to find a corresponding image on-line.
