Field Notes
Description:
Rhinos are topical at the moment, unfortunately as a result of the rampant poaching spree of the past 2 years. I wanted to share with you some more positive images! I was fortunate to obtain images of both African rhino species in the Zululand game reserves this month and we'd like to illustrate the differences between these two species.
Firstly, the Black Rhinoceros which is predominantly a browser, feeding off bushes and thickets, hence it holds its head at a high angle and its prehensile lips can clearly be seen in this image. This feature is the source the alternative and more accurate name of Hook-lipped Rhinoceros. Other differences from the White Rhino include its smaller size, fiercer temperament and general preference for more densely wooded environments.
