Field Notes

Description:

The White Rhinoceros has been misleadingly named as both species are actually grey in colour! Its name is a corruption of the Afrikaans word "wyd" meaning wide, in reference to its very wide mouth, designed for grazing. Its alternative name of Square-lipped Rhinoceros is more appropriate. As a result of cropping grass from ground level, the White Rhino holds is head at a lower angle than its smaller, browsing cousin.

Happy World Rhino Day! This picture remains one of my very favorites!
The borders of South Africa's famous Kruger National Park are not as safe a refuge as they appear — over half the rhino deaths related to poaching in South Africa, which is home to 80 percent of the world's rhino population, occured inside the park. Many that work there are on strike, inciting additional fears about the security of the rhinos within Kruger's perimeter.
Hi AdamRiley, You have many amazing pics of Rhino's. Congrats on all photo's! Please add as many as you want to help raise awareness of the Rhino Horn plight. http://www.projectnoah.org/missions/12848241
