Description:

I 1/2" long orange & black striped caterpillar with branched spines.

Notes:

This is far more striped than the caterpillar I spotted earlier this year http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/7283870 - maybe a different instar?

Thanks chebeagueschool! The spines are actually quite soft & don't hurt at all. I think some of the hairy caterpillars can irritate the skin though.
WOW! Great photos. And you solved a mystery for me. I think one of my caterpillars that looks so similar is a type of fritillary too! We got a lot of meadow fritillary butterflies this summer.Thanks for ALL your help!
