Field Notes

Description:

A male three toed box turtle I found on a walk around the park. I know he's a three toed becaus he has three toes on each of his hindfeet. There is some confusion and overlap with the eastern box turtle, and they are known to hybridize since the three toed is a subspecies of the former. This is the State reptile of Missouri. It's believed that they're poisonous by nature of eating poisonous mushrooms that they themselves are immune to. Three toed turtles migrate depending on the climate and during dry months prefer forested areas where they make burrows of leaf litter which explains this one being close the forest.

Habitat:

Native to the Eastern US. The most north is gets is here in Kansas and Missouri.
