Field Notes

Description:

A very interesting almost entirely aquatic, near useless on land bird. 2 pix of Eared Grebes floating nests and eggs would not load. But suffice it to say they are a vulnerable lot however common...it's just not so easy to pick them out in a crowd. The males and females look beautiful and alike. Young are good to go upon birth... certainly a social bird within their species, prefering the colony approach to life.

Habitat:

Any back water sorta place with reeds 'n rushes and tall sedges to mask their incessant breeding squabbles ~ talk about chaos!

Notes:

i spent a several weekends hang'n out with these guys in the flooded areas of the High Plains north of Billings, MT...
Their breeding plumage is quite stunning not to mention the floating nests and eggs with no bird on it... can't wait for them to return

Great shots and commentary. I've only seen them non-breeding. Would love to see the shots of the floating nests,
