Hi Viv! I think you're right with Kaniska canace! I checked the closely related anglewings butterflies yesterday (see the polygonal shape of wings) but totally missed the nearby genus Kaniska. The good thing is that there seems to be only one species in Kaniska, Kanisca kanace: http://tolweb.org/Nymphalini/70222 So I think you're safe with Kaniska canace. I couldn't say about the subspecies perakana, as subspecies can be regionally very specific and I am totally unfamiliar with the area. This may also necessitate closer shots and a view of the undersides. A beautiful butterfly anyway!
Hi Daniele! I took a photo of a butterfly a few years ago on Koh Samui and someone (Les Day - www.delias-butterflies.co.uk) identified it as Kaniska canace perakana. I took this photo earlier in the year here on the mainland but not sure if it could be the same. Maybe you could check it out for me please. I love taking photos of everything around me but have very very little knowledge about species etc which is why I am finding Project Noah so incredible.
This one's quite beautiful Viv, I hope someone can ID it (I've had no luck so far...)!
