Field Notes

Description:

Also known as Asian Pied Starling, this is a black and white very noisy bird with intricate head colouring: white cheeks, red eye patches, red and yellow bill and black crown and bib. Belongs to Starling family (Sturnidae), and it is of the average starling size and shape.

Habitat:

Observed in urban environment of Cox's Bazar, where it is one of the most common birds. Here, observed in a small agricultural field, (paddy and vegetables), on my walking route between the beach and mainstreet, with plenty of ponds, backyard gardens and patches of wetlands.

Notes:

Called shalik or go-shalik in Bengali (Bangla).
