Field Notes

Description:

Lots of these about all the time but they appear 'en masse' after rain, mostly this grey colour but some are reddish brown. There are several Ommatoiulus species known in Spain with 5 new ones described in 2012 alone. The majority seem to vary in length from around 3cm to around 5cm. They are adapted to survive the long droughts which we often have here.

Habitat:

Limestone outcrop in foothills of los Serranos mountains. Seen along roads and tracks having come from the verges or surrounding fields, and often congregate in the excavated mounds around ants burrows, especially after rain.
