Eastern Giant Swallowtail
Papilio cresphontes
28.8935, -82.5742
Field Notes
Description:
This was probably the most convincing camouflage I have seen in a long time. It really did just look like a little stick protruding from the tree. This was an overwinter chrysalis and did not emerge until the end of February.
Habitat:
Orange tree in a suburban yard
Notes:
I often find the eggs and caterpillars on this tree, but I rarely find the chrysalis because many caterpillars get eaten by wasps or other predatory insects.
