Field Notes

Description:

Tennessee is in the process of being colonized by Pyrgus albescens (White Checkered-Skipper), a species that is indistinguishable from P. communis (Common Checkered-skipper) in the field; only microscopic examination of the valves (genitalia) or DNA testing can be used to determine species.

Habitat:

Meadow

Notes:

I spotted this tiny skipper sheltering under a leaf in the rain. I initially had no idea of the species as I've never seen these markings before, but then it obligingly spread it's wings & I was able to see the typical brown & white dorsal pattern of the common or white checkered skipper. I also spotted a second slightly larger & paler one close by (photo 5)
