Field Notes

Description:

Large puffball mushroom. Surface is cracked dark brown/maroon and cream with a mosaic-like pattern. Shape is spherical (on top) to tapered (on bottom). The interior gleba (spore mass) is pure white.

Calvatia cyathiformis is a saprobic, terrestrial puffball. It is easily identified by its mature spore mass, which changes from white to purple before dispersal. It is considered a choice edible when the interior is still white.

Habitat:

This was a large specimen found growing in grass in a fielded area in a public park.
