ah,i also make mistakes !! but thanks.I want to have also some nice/new/updated fungi-books, my now used books getting outdated. by "fungi' is it allways: at the right time at the right place", it is a very big question of: luck and a little bit of: choose the right spot.
I knew it was a bit rash to update this without your input Alex! Thanks so much, yes very convinced, it did have a velvety texture. I have a very fine book on UK & European fungi (Michael Jordan's) & wanted to check this but it's in storage at the moment, so it's extra gratifying to get this IDed. Now I also realise how lucky we were to see it looking so very fresh. Good news for me, bad news for Benmore's conifers (there's a very fine collection there)
i'm almost certain about it, when you rethink: it had surely somewhat like a velvet cap?!!! I like those fungis, looking nice soft. i had found also one the last month, the color were stunning at the begin, 2 weeks later he was mostly discolored and last week when i was there again, the last remnants were still standing. ( http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/7188605 ). Take a look at this ( http://www.google.nl/search?tbm=isch&hl=nl&source=hp&biw=1201&bih=597&q=phaeolus&gbv=2&oq=phaeolus&aq=f&aqi=g-L2&aql=&gs_sm=s&gs_upl=5440l5440l0l7349l1l1l0l0l0l0l868l868l6-1l1l0 ) - the 17th picture at the first page. (hope you get this at the same order than i). good luck
I compared this to Carols ,both have beautiful colors!
