Field Notes

Description:

Very big, with long neck and long legs. Black and white with red bill and red legs. Unmistakable when seen on the ground. When flying, holds neck out straight, has projecting legs, and soars.

Habitat:

Breeds in open farmland with access to swampy riversides, marshes and floodlands. Nests, often in small colonies, in stick nest on house roofs, church towers, telephone poles.

We humans are really creating a terrible mess, aren't we?
I think it's definitely global warming, causing the birds to get confused about when they're supposed to be migrating. I was in England last week and a nature program on the TV was saying that certain types of geese are very delayed in migrating from Eastern (like Latvia) and Northern (like Sweden) Europe to winter in England because the weather hasn't been cold enough for them to leave yet and it isn't normal.... It's possible the storks will leave again once the weather turns colder but I hope they don't start nesting in the meantime....
Wow! I wonder if this is global warming (heating) in action? I wonder if these ones think it's still summer in Europe?
They did all leave and I wasn't expecting to see them until next year, but then today while I was out, I saw quite a lot around. The last photo is a different location to the others, but only a couple of km away from each other.
Do these guys stay year-round in Portugal? I thought they migrated to Africa in September.
