Field Notes

Description:

A medium-sized butterfly with black wings. The wings are tipped with a thin, white band, with a much thicker yellow band below that. A band of small, white dots breaks up a long section of black, and about mid-way down the wings is a band of red. Nearer the base of the wings is a mottled collection of red, white and yellow dots. The body of the butterfly is black, but the legs are reddish-orange.

Habitat:

Somewhere around halfway down Mombacho Volcano this, and many other types of butterflies, were variously settling on cultivated flowers outside of a coffee shop. The area is cloudy, often rainy, but at an elevation that was still fairly warm.
