This southern raccoon sure looks like the northern ones, except the rings on the tail aren't as dark. I never heard the German name for them before, but I see how it came about. Raccoons have marvelous hands that are their primary sensing instrument; they'll handle things to explore them while not looking at them at all.
Name makes sense since they seem to be washing something all the time.
