Field Notes

Description:

Caterpillars with dashed lines parallel down back. Found seven of them under fallen oak leaves in my front lawn while raking. They were cold and curled up, so I assume they were hiding for the winter. I relocated them to a sheltered leaf pile in my yard. These caterpillars become Large Yellow Underwing moths.

Habitat:

Suburban yard with lots of red and white oak leaves.

I too have seen these before, but never tried to figure out what they were. Thanks everyone!
I've seen these in the dead of winter, too.
a.k.a. winter cutworm... very cold tolerant, I have seen them out feeding on mild winter days with 2 feet of snow on the ground.
Looks very similar to this http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/7712078
