Description:

Large, tall wading bird that nests in treetop colonies. Wades in shallow water to stealthly stalk or ambush fish, frogs, and other prey.

Habitat:

Shallow water areas along river banks and lakeshores. Nests in treetop colonies.

Notes:

This photo was taken at the North Mississippi Regional Park. The heron is carrying nesting materials back to a nesting site found on an island downstream from the visitor center.
