Field Notes

Description:

Small, elegant, attractive and discreet dove, some 25 cm in length, with cinnamon coloured wings, mottled with black and distinguishing black and white checkered neck.

Habitat:

Seen on borders of mediterranean maquis, close to a not-so-crowded beach on Adriatic coast of Croatia.

Notes:

The European population is rapidly declining, and he dove is vulnerable (IUCN) globally, mainly because of destruction of its habitats. Second big factor of this decline is hunt, especially during spring migration - in Malta, or example, these hunts are well rooted in and deadly. In other Mediterranean countries, in particular in France, the laws regarding hunt are becoming even more relaxed; and the Turtle Dove could become even bigger victim.
