Field Notes

Description:

There is a lot of discrepancy in the names for this species. Common names include Black-eyed Bulbul and Common Bulbul also, and that is just in South Africa. There are lots of sub-species which some authorities treat as separate species and several scientific names are also used. In the Clements list Pycnonotus barbatus covers all the variations so I have used that. The official South African list uses Pycnonotus tricolor, which is not in Clements, which quotes Pycnonotus barbatus layardi for South Africa and Pycnonotus barbatus tricolor for central Africa only!

Habitat:

Tree in Skukuza camp

Notes:

Pictures taken about an hour or so after the earlier ones show the birds in their true colours.
