Field Notes

Description:

This plant certainly looks like a cedar, but it's truly a club moss and more closely related to ferns, reproducing via spores rather than flowers and seeds. (It also reproduces clonally via "runners.") Here you can see the emerging strobili - the club-like appendages that release its spores - as well as mature strobili.

Habitat:

USA: AL , AR , CT , DC , GA , IL , IN , KY , MA , MN , MO , NC , NJ , NY , OH , PA , RI , SC , TN , VA , WI , WV
Canada: ON , QC
Native Distribution: Eastern North America from Quebec to Alabama, Zones 4 to 7
Native Habitat: Dry, well-drained woodlands and pine forests

Notes:

Spotted along the Bear Creek Trail Ellijay GA
