spotted on small lake dock

Notes:

This bird was standing at the end of the dock panting and seemed unconcerned with my presence.

His tongue is interesting with those back-facing barbs.
It was pretty awsome. This fellow didn't even flinch when I came onto the dock andI was able to walk past him coming within three feet. A very 'user friendly' bird.
have never been that close - awesome!
I really couldn't say why the bird was panting--it was a rather warm day. This heron is apparetly used to the people that frequent the lake; he stayed for about twenty twenty minutes.
Wonderful close ups! I am curious though...Do you know what the cause of panting was? Did he stay on the dock long?
