Description:

the whole cluster was about 10 inches wide and 4 1/2 inches tall

Habitat:

spooted on roadside beside river next to (but not on) an old oak stump

Those look a lot like the jack-o-lantern mushrooms (Omphalotus illudens) I spotted a few months ago - http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/7218314.
