Description:

this is a vine plant. It has three leaves that come out of the stem every 10 or so inches. the seed pods look like string beans.

Habitat:

tropical dry forest in NW Costa Rica. this plant was growing roadside in partial shade.

It's native to southern Japan and China. I guess there's not the same natural control out of its native range. I should say, it's foolish to make a statement like I did, based on an online ID. For all I know, there could be a native vine which looks very similar. If it is, at least it's got lots of uses but clearly needs controlling, as it will be outcompeting a lot of native plants for light, water and nutrients, which in a country with Costa Rica's diversity would be especially terrible.

Scary plant. If you see it again, dig it up and destroy it.
