Field Notes

Description:

I was standing on the beach when I saw this dragonfly trying to swim and struggling immensely. I picked it up and placed it on a blueberry bush, only for another one to swim up as soon as I returned to the shore. I think it is possible they were either mating and fell in the water, or fighting and fell in. However, I can't tell if they are both males of different species or same species with different coloration or just a male and a female of the same species. Large darner with a brownish thorax with yellow stripes and the abdomen is black with blue markings. The eyes are blue with a pale yellow face.

Habitat:

Found in the water close to shore of Afognak Island. This was up in a little calm cove.
