Field Notes

Description:

Large, black and white bird. Checkerboard back with white necklace, black head, deep red eye, and long pointed bill.

Habitat:

Spotted at Tamarac on Pine Lake. This bird prefers clear lakes because it hunts for fish by eyesight. Legs are set so far back that it has a hard time walking on land but it's a great swimmer.

Notes:

The state bird of Minnesota.
