Field Notes

Description:

This female hummingbird has a green back and wings. The throat is speckled with gray. The tail and wings have dark markings on them and a white tip on the tail. The first image shows her looooong tongue!

Habitat:

Mexican Bush Sage in the backyard. This one came within 30cm of my legs while I stood very still and snapped some pictures.

That's really interesting! I hadn't noticed that behavior. Most of the one's that are close are juveniles. Thanks for the info!

I'm not really the person to ask at all -- especially about hummers, and no I can't tell the difference. I often just assume that all hummingbirds are Anna's around here. But really, hummers are more easily identified by their flight displays. Anna's are the ones who fly up VERY high and then make a steep dive with a metallic clang at the bottom of the dive. Those are males. The female is the one sitting on a tree branch observing the show-off maneuvers.

The females are really hard to distinguish. I haven't seen a male Black-chinned hummingbird around but it's always possible.
