Field Notes
Description:
Turkey Vultures have few natural predators and they are protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918.
These birds are not aggressive and rarely feed on live prey. They are scavengers and feed almost exclusively on carrion, but have also been recorded eating mussels, shrimp, grasshoppers, grapes & coyote feces. Their vocalization is limited to grunts & hisses because they lack the vocal organ of birds.
Habitat:
Most of North America, Central america & South America. Open and wooded areas. Often seen along roadsides - cleaning up roadkill, near rivers - feasting on washed-up fish.
