American Alligator
Alligator mississippiensis
28.117, -96.8003
Field Notes
Description:
A native of the Texas coast and resident of lakes, rivers, and marshes, the alligator is common throughout the Refuge. Once endangered in Texas, the status of this large reptile is now “threatened,” and the animal is making a comeback in many areas of the state of Texas. Although it lives in fresh water, the alligator can sometimes be seen feeding in the bays. In the spring, the males can often be heard “bellowing” their mating calls.(Taken from the official site of the Aransas NWR)
