Description:
I went outside yesterday afternoon, and I spotted six lovebugs, that were mating and flying around, my front porch. They were also mating on the window panes, of the left and right front windows. I was only able to take one good photo, as these lovebugs, kept moving around a lot, while they were mating. Lovebugs, are small black flies, with a dull, somewhat velvety appearance, except that the top of the thorax, ( the area immediately behind the head ), is red. Males 6-7 mm. in length. Females 6-9 mm. in length.
Habitat:
Both larval and adult Lovebugs, are found primarily in grass habitats. Plecia nearctica, are strong flyers, however, and can be encountered in almost any habitat. They are especially partial to freshly cut lawns, animal pastures, and decaying vegetation.
Notes:
Yesterday afternoon, I spotted some black insects, mating on some of the left and right front window panes. I went outside, and I noticed that these were Lovebugs. I also noticed, that they had a red area, on top of there thorax. This red area, helped me to identify these black insects, as Lovebugs.
