Field Notes

Description:

"As winter approaches, the wasps die – except any just-fertilized queens. These hibernate underground, under logs or in hollow trees until spring. The nest itself is generally abandoned by winter, and will not be reused. When spring arrives, the young queens emerge and the cycle begins again."

Notes:

The exterior shot of the nest was taken on October 17, 2010. I waited for a couple of hard frosts and steady cold weather to finally peek inside.

Thank you, during the warmer months I didn't go anywhere near the nest :)
I would be scared to take that picture!! Nice spotting!!
Thanks, I admit that these hornets make me very nervous, they are cantankerous little buggers! This nest was hung low in the tree ~ right where you could bump into it if you weren't paying attention.
very well taken Pic.. nice spotting
