Field Notes

Description:

LARGE dragonfly (about 6 cm long, with body about 0.5 cm wide), with gold body, and dark brown pattern on clear wings. The brown area on the wings is just a small spot on the distal edge of the front wings, but covers the entire inner 1/4 of the back wings in a jagged half-moon appearing pattern.

Habitat:

I happened to find these on a sidewalk very near a marsh after an unusually cold night.

Notes:

These were about to get stepped on, but I was able to gently coax them onto my fingers so I could move them to a safer location (and get a great pic in the process!) Can anyone help me find the technical name for this type of dragonfly? I have looked MULTIPLE places, and cannot find anything that looks exactly like it, so am not sure how to classify it.
