Gray's Spinner Dolphin
Stenella longirostris
9.5738, -76.8853
Field Notes
Description:
Dark grey backs, light grey bellies, and bottle-shaped noses. This pod was between 8 and 10 dolphins - it was a bit hard to tell since they never stopped playing with each other and playing catch-up with the front of the boat.
Habitat:
I came across these dolphins in the open waters of the southern Caribbean Sea, a good 10 hours out of Cartagena, Colombia coming from the San Blas of Panama.
Notes:
There was absolutely no land in sight, and no warning these dolphins were coming up on us. Honestly I thought someone had fallen off the boat when I heard the first splash, but instead I was lucky to be the person on the boat who yelled, "Dolphins!"
