Field Notes

Description:

Small agile bird with mostly slate gray back and wings. Dark crown from bill to neck. White face and breast. Long thin bill used to get at insects in the bark. Slight rusty color near the vent.

Habitat:

Usually found in forests of deciduous than coniferous trees

Notes:

This little bird was actually being a ham and would leave until I took more pictures.

Thank You Brian and Daniele. I saw 3 species that day in the same area. But the shots of the Red-breasted didn’t come out well.

Great shots Janet! Your White-breasted Nuthatch is our Spotting of the Day: "In typical "head down" position, this White-breasted Nuthatch (Sitta carolinensis) is our Spotting of the Day! Like other nuthatches (family Sittidae), the white-breasted nuthatch uses its strong feet to descend tree trunks head-first and hang upside-down beneath twigs and branches when foraging for food. Nuthatches are also distinctively vocal, using an assortment of whistles, trills and calls. Members of the nuthatch family are found in most of North America and Europe, and throughout Asia down to the Wallace Line".
