Field Notes

Description:

Milkweed Bug. They do have a correct name, they are large, 25 mm long (one inch).

Habitat:

Flowering plant in a pine forest at 2,300 m asl.

Thank you bayucca for the ID correction and the links. It was in a very remote place.
Certainly an Oncopeltus sp., but not the famous Oncopeltus fasciatus. The markings are different. Very similar ones are Oncopeltus cayensis and Oncopeltus sexmaculatus (with, however, a white spot) and Oncopeltus guttas/gutta. http://www.boldsystems.org/index.php/TaxBrowser_Taxonpage?taxid=7289 http://bugguide.net/node/view/116191/bgimage http://bugguide.net/node/view/875845/bgimage Unfortunately I did not find a perfect match concerning the red spot on the head, missing white spot and shape of the yellow patches.
