Woah... It would really be strange if it's eating its friend, but I think it's just eating it's "old skin". I saw this once when a caterpillar started eating it's old skin/exoskeleton after molting. This is a great spot. Do you by chance know what plant was the caterpillar standing on? It might helping in ID'ing it.
