Field Notes

Description:

This is actually a small termite next located on a wooden fence post. This measure about ten inches by 8 inches. The largest I have seen near my home easily measures 3 feet by 3 feet. These nest are a source of food for various area birds including trogons, woodpeckers, and a few others.

Habitat:

Tropical dry forest in NW Costa Rica end of rainy season.
