Field Notes

Description:

It’s larger than our local common flies (all black)
The wings seem thick and dark instead of translucent.
It has red and white markings on its back as well as very thick hairs on it.

Habitat:

I found it at 3011 meters high (9880 feet)
La Calera, Cundinamarca, Colombia
I live in a semi rural area in the mountains close to Bogotá, the capital.
It’s usually cold, rainy and humid.

Notes:

This fly seems to fly slower than the common local fly.
It also makes a high buzzing sound which made me think it was a beetle when I first saw it.
