Field Notes

Description:

This crab was wandering down the sidewalk when I came upon it. I'm sure it was pushed out of its usual habitat due to the flooding on the island due to Hurricane Alex a couple days prior. It is quite large (and kinda creepy looking, with the way it eyed me!)

Habitat:

pavement/grassy area, but nothing on that narrow strip of an island is too far from the water.

Oh thanks, Aunt Nance! Pictures of that one match the one I saw precisely. And it does show up on the gulf coast.
Yeah, I know it doesn't seem right... but I remember when I found it everyone there was telling me it was a blue crab, so I went off their seeming knowledge. I think it's one that probably doesn't even belong there, because I looked through a list of native species and none fit. I'll remove the identity.
Yes he's blue and he's a crab. And these are very nice pictures; but compare your crab with the blue crab: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Callinectes_sapidus
