Field Notes

Description:

Took this picture in May, this species of rafflesia is endemic to Borneo and takes the form of a growing brown bud for 6-9 months before blooming for 2-3 days...both male and female flowers must open simultaneously for pollination to occur, hence successful pollination is quite rare and some species may be endangered...

Habitat:

grow on roots of certain Lianas in the highland jungle around Mt.Kinabalu...condition was wet and humid then...

Nice one Randall... Am dying to check it out in Tambunan if i have the chance to go there. For spottings on R. keithii u can check out in Poring Hotsprings... Im sure u can find it there...
Thx, Bong...I'm sure there are much better spottings worth that title...mine's a bit blurr..
Great spotting Randall...looking this to be a spot of the day...
this species does not emit such rotting smell as that of rafflesia arnoldii...nothing much distinct about its odour...all I could smell then was the tranquilizing humid air of the forrest...:)
nice... come back soon, nature awaits your future arrival...
Yeah, Borneo has been my favorite place so far. I spent 3 months there in 2001/02 but would love to go back. Look forward to more spottings from there.
thx...yeah, the rafflesia is an endoparasite and parasitize lianas of the Tetrastigma sp. Checked ur spotting too, yours seem better..:) guess u've toured Borneo already...
Fantastic spotting! Rafflesia's are my favorite! I also saw R. pricei and a few other species. The blooms can last for 5-7 days I believe. The lianas they parasitize are all species of Tetrastigma. http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/5883059
