Description:
The male of this species is mainly scarlet red in color but the female is very pretty, too. Grayish brown crown, narrow white eyebrow, white throat and breast with dusky streaks, peach belly and undertail feathers, and a dark eyeline.
Habitat:
Usually found near the southwestern border of the U.S. and southward into Mexico, Central America and South America. Likes riverside woodlands and other areas.
Notes:
This flycatcher has been the talk of the Ridgefield NWR, located in southwestern Washington state, for many weeks now. This is my first sighting of the bird and also my first photograph of it. I was given information about its location at the refuge and waited around for about an hour and a half before seeing the bird on a post. I was so excited to finally see and photograph the bird! This bird is about a thousand miles north of its normal range. I witnessed it catching a big bug today and she is doing just fine!
