Description:
Red Bellied-woodpecker is medium sized and pale in color. The female has a red nape, reddish around base of bill. Black and white - barred back, gray face, crown and underparts. The red belly is usually concealed by surrounding gray feathers. The male has a red forehead, cap and nape. It has a straight black bill.

Habitat:
Red bellied-woodpeckers are common in many Eastern woodlands and forests from old stands of oak and hickory to young hardwoods and pines. they will often venture to backyard feeders, as this one did. They can be found from Southern Canada to the Northeastern United States.
Notes:
These birds mainly search out arthropods on tree trunks. They may also catch insects in flight. They are omnivores, eating insects, fruits, nuts and seeds.
There breeding habitat is usually deciduous forest. they usually make their nest in decayed in cavities of old trees or old stumps.
