Description:

There isn't a bold band on the bill that's typically found on this species. It dove under water when the current brought it close to me.

I actually already changed it but it apparently didn't save or reverted back to unknown? Well anyway, it's updated.
Cindy . i have seen so many that I feel it is Pied billed. I made a suggestion. See what you think. If any different , i will remove the suggestion.

Thank you for the great information! I was more referring to the species ID rather than the family.
Grebes are built for water with legs situated far back on their bodies to facilitate diving for food. This type of anatomy makes walking on land awkward and difficult; therefore, you'll rarely see them out of the water if you're lucky enough to see them at all! http://www.dec.ny.gov/animals/85203.html I had abetter link. Will post when I find it.
I'm rather curious now. What about the legs would lead you to believe this is a Pied-billed Grebe?
