Field Notes

Description:

Very similar to monarchs. Distinguished by a post medium black line that runs across the veins on the hind wings.

Habitat:

Found on a willow tree. Salix. The caterpillars feed on willows and other trees in that family.

Notes:

Caterpillars accumulate salicylic acid which is distasteful to birds. They are considered a mullerian mimic of Monarchs as birds don't like either.
