Field Notes

Description:

Black body with yellow rings and bands of yellow dots. Red face. About 8 cm long.

Habitat:

This caterpillar was crawling around in the grass amid coffee plants, halfway up a huge volcano in the high mountains area of Guatemala.

Notes:

This caterpillar and my other unknown caterpillar were found about three steps apart on the same soil on Volcan Agua.

Species ID Suggestions

Comments (1)

This looks an awful lot like a Frangipani Hawkmoth caterpillar (Pseudosphinx tetrio), except for those extra rings of yellow spots. Although caterpillars can be very variable, I can't find any other photos of that species with the spots shown in your photo. Hopefully someone else can jump in and provide a definitive ID.
