But I saw this moth at the museum of Natural History, and even though that is in the north east, I am not sure it is indigenous as I was told it was an Atlas Moth, though I'm not sure about that either.

Hmm.... I may have been too hasty in my identification. This photo was taken at The Museum of Natural History in NY and I was TOLD by the guide that it was an Atlas Moth. Now after Kristen's suggestion I have looked into Cecropia and it looks more likely the actual moth I photographed. Thanks for the ID suggestion Kristen.

I believe you have a male Cecropia Moth. The males have a beautiful gray and red coloration and can be found in your area.

I feel so strange to look at this one. I never see a this kind of Large moth in Closed wing ventral view. Nice spotting..!!

Was this in a butterfly garden? Atlas moths aren't native to North America, so it's important to add that extra information.

bet its a male, it has that fluffly antanae to 'track' pheromones secreted by the females of their species...Lovely picture...
