Field Notes

Description:

The red-bellied woodpecker has a black & white barred pattern on its back. This gives rise to one of its alternate names - the zebra woodpecker. This male has a bright red cap. The red wash on the woodpecker's belly (which gives it its name) is not visible in these pictures.

Habitat:

Local park; wooded area.

Notes:

The red-bellied woodpecker is protected in the USA under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act.

I think his relative is at my backyard recently. Mine is not shy and seems to not mind his picture being taken. But, the BlueJays come out and he flies off for me. Mine looks like he's got a scratch on his head.
Thanks, he was not excited about having his picture taken and had a blue jay trying to run interference for him!
