Field Notes

Description:

Small, green moth, between 1/2 and 3/4 inch long. Location in southeast Georgia, near low land, woods area. Wing tip and body are brown and head is a beautiful furry, spring green color. Looks like a green leaf starting to dry up! Amazingly camouflaged by its Creator!

Habitat:

Near low lying, sometimes wet, wooded area.

You can always label it as a Parasa species moth and leave it at that.

The size certainly points more towards P. chloris, but your moth has characteristics like P. indetermina too - a dark patch near the center outer margin of the forewings, the relative size of the green patches vs. brown patches on the forewings, and the wavy nature of the line of green on the forewings. I honestly can't come to a better i.d. than this, sorry! :)

I measured the small black squares on my screen door- the moth is just slightly under 1/2 inch long. Hope that helps!

Thanks, Heather. The first photo of the Parasa Chloris looks the most similar to the moth I saw. Unfortunately, the moth was no longer there when I came home, so no opportunity for me to measure accurately. The fore feet of the moth were more hairy also like the Parasa Chloris moth,although it was not resting with the wings spread out so I couldn't compare it to the other photos very well.
