Description:
The Pacific Black Duck is a member of the family Anatidae. It's mostly mid-brown in colour, with each feather edged buff. The head pattern is characteristic, with a dark brown line through the eye, bordered with cream above and below and a dark brown crown. The upper wing colour is the same as the back, with a bright glossy green patch in the secondary flight feathers. The white underwing is conspicuous in flight. Young birds are similar to the adults in plumage.
Habitat:
Spotted this pair feeding in a stormwater channel adjacent to a suburban park. It was thick with algae and a variety of aquatic plants. The water seemed dirty to me, and could do with a really good flushing out with heavy rain. The ducks didn't seem to mind, and they were feeding quite happily.
